The walking trail includes seven inspiring places for you to discover

  1. NewBridge Project
    232-240 High St, Gateshead NE8 1DJ
    The NewBridge Project (est. 2010) is a vibrant hub supporting the creation of new and pioneering contemporary art practice through an ambitious programme of exhibitions, commissions, events and artist development. A range of our artists will be opening their studios to give you a sneak peek into what amazing things they do all day. They will be exhibiting other member’s artworks in our communal space. Expect paintings, risograph prints, installations and interactive bits.

  2. Saint Cuthbert’s Church
    Derwentwater Rd, Gateshead NE8 1US
    Designed by eminent Tyneside architect John Dobson and built between 1846 and 1848, Saint Cuthbert’s church occupies a prominent position on Bensham Bank. It’s currently home to Cotfield Mirrors, who make beautiful hand crafted mirrors, mosaics and furniture items. They use reclaimed, recycled and salvaged materials. There is also a new cafe inside which will be serving refreshments.

  3. Bensham Grove Community Centre
    Sidney Grove, Gateshead NE8 2XD
    Bensham Grove Community Centre can be found in a wonderful Grade II listed building in the heart of Gateshead. The building has lots of original Arts and Crafts features and is well worth a visit. There is also a workshops programme where people who want to participate in practical crafts can join a wide range of exciting and innovative tasters supported by North East Creative craft: a partnership of learning and creativity. Refreshments will be on sale including tea, coffee and cake.

  4. Brighton Road Studios
    163 Brighton Road, Gateshead, NE8 1XS
    Brighton Road Studios is a busy thriving hub for local creatives, including painters, print-makers, jewellery design, leatherwork and sci-fi props! It was created and developed by Mushroom Works CIC. In 2011, Mushroom Works CIC bought the building and refurbished it with support from Department for Communities and Local Government, Arts Council England, and Gateshead Council. Lots of artist studios will be open to meet the makers & browse, free creative activities will be taking place, and original art & crafts will be on sale
    Subsidised refreshments will be available to purchase including tea, coffee and cake – all funds going towards next year’s event.

  5. Saint Chad’s Church
    195 Rawling Rd, Gateshead NE8 4QU
    This hidden treasure was built as a cathedral for working people. Very beautiful, with a lovely atmosphere. The highlights of St. Chad’s are the wood carving and the stained glass windows by important designers in the Arts and Crafts movement.

  6. Best of Bensham
    18 Brinkburn Ave, Gateshead NE8 4JT
    This new unusual library is being brought to Gateshead as part of Heritage Open Days by the Best of Bensham Collaborative, a community organisation which aims to support local residents and help them to realise their ambitions. The former florist will act both as a base for the group and somewhere for people to get together with friends and neighbours.

  7. Dunston Woodcraft
    Rear of Saint Oswalds Hospice Store, Ellison Rd, Gateshead NE11 9TS
    A woodwork shop making unique, and bespoke gifts and furniture for the home and garden. Their spacious workshops are well worth a visit, as the building has some significant historical value. Your host Yvonne will be eager to explain what the building was famous for, and she will be offering some free activities to take part in.
